India’s first woman Defence Minister – Nirmala Sitharaman

• Nirmala Sitharaman (58) became first full time woman Defence Minister of India. She was promoted to the Union Cabinet. Nirmala takes charge of the crucial ministry from Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

  Mukhtar  Abbas Naqvi, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal – promoted to Cabinet rank and nine fresh faces joined as ministers of state in a major rejig of his team by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
• Piyush Goyal elected as new Railway Minister after Suresh Prabhu quit the post. He is new Minister of Railways and Minister of Coal. Earlier he was Minister of State for Power.
• Nitin Gadkari gets additional charge of Ministry of Water Resources, River Development Ganga Rejuvenation from Uma Bharti. Now Gadkati has Ministry of Road Transport and Highways; Ministry of Shipping; and Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
• Uma Bharti now Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
• Suresh Prabhu is now Minister of Commerce and Industry.
• Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is now Minister of Minority Affairs.

Alert on spread of ‘Locky Ransomware’

• An alert on spread of new malware ‘Locky Ransomware’ that can lock computers and demand ransom for unlocking them by the Union Government.
• Ransomware is malevolent software and the Locky Ransomware is learnt to be demanding ransom of half bitcoin, which at present rate is equivalent to over Rs 1.5 lakh.

Visit of PM to China to attend BRICS summit

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits The ninth BRICS summit started in Xiamen, China under China’s Chairmanship on September 3.
• It is scheduled from 3–5 September 2017.
• Last year, Goa hosted the 8th BRICS summit.
• BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Spacewoman Whitson returns to Earth

• NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the world’s most expert spacewoman, has returned to Earth after clocking cumulative 665 days in space.
• The 57-year-old landed after completing 288 days and 4,623 orbits around Earth during her third ISS mission.

• The world’s most powerful X-ray laser has begun operating at Hamburg where scientists will attempt to reinvent the conditions deep inside the sun and produce film-like sequences of viruses and cells.

Joint military exercise of Nepal-India begins

• India and Nepal have started their joint military exercise in the western part of Nepal with the name of Surya Kiran.
• The aim is to focusing on counter-terrorism and forest fighting operations.

Construction of BRICS bank headquarters starts in Shanghai

• A foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction of the permanent headquarters building of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) was held on September2 in Shanghai, China.
